Welcome to The Lonely Road!

The Lonely Road Foundation is a Sub-Saharan African development charity, aiming to bring life, hope and opportunity to orphaned and vulnerable children in rural and underprivileged communities in South Africa.

Our Inspiration...
In 2006, on a visit to a rural village in Limpopo, our Founding Director, Thabang Skwambane, met the two-year old girl you see in this photograph. While sitting in a room discussing the orphaned children in the community, there was a scratching at the door. When the villagers failed to respond, Thabang opened the door to this toddler, carrying her one meal for the day - chicken feet and pap. Both of her parents had died of AIDS-related illnesses and the villagers declared that she needed to learn to fend for herself.

“No child should be forced to be independent at twenty months. I vowed on that day that she, and other African children like her, would not walk alone through life and be scarred by our lack of empathy and our failure to provide for innocent children in such desperate need.”
– Thabang Skwambane
